By now, many of you have heard of the super qualities of nourishing chocolate. The key to chocolate’s super qualities however, is to eat it in as close to its natural state as possible.
Cacao – not to be confused with the modern-day refined and sugar-laden cocoa – is the seed (nut) of a fruit of an indigenous American jungle tree. Raw cacao is one of nature’s most fabulous superfoods due to its mineral content, antioxident profile and its unique array of natural chemicals.
You can buy cacao in the form of cacao beans, cacao nibs, cacao butter and most commonly as cacao powder. Be sure to check the packaging as you are looking for a raw and certified organic product. On a recent scout of my local IGA and my local health food shop I picked up four different brands of cacao powder – it is easily accessible these days. My favourite brands are this and this.
Last week I spoke to a large audience of ladies on the nourishing and medicinal benefits of chocolate and the reasons that we should celebrate chocolate. This Choc Avocado Mousse recipe was a hit!
2 avocados peeled & deseeded
1/2 cup cacao powder (approx. 50g)
1 cup of dates (preferably Medjools) deseeded (& soaked in water for 5 minutes if they are firm & dry)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup filtered water
pinch of sea salt
1. Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy, with no lumps. (Approximately 1 minute in a powerful blender).
2. Important! Taste test before refrigerating. For example, add more avocado to make it creamier or add another date to make it sweeter or add a little water to improve consistency.
3. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.
