One of my wisest teachers in life is our fluffy little friend, Barley, who turned one just the other day. She has been in our lives for nearly a year and has already profoundly impacted the energy and joy in our household.
Just recently I have come to the realisation that her sole purpose in life is to get more love. She will do almost anything to get more cuddles, get another scratch, get more walking, get a belly rub, chase another ball and laze in the sun a little longer. She leads a blessed and blissful life.
Now, all my family and friends reading this will find some humour. I’ve never really had a pet before in my life. Actually, I nearly cried when we got Barley because I didn’t think I was ready for yet more responsibility. I put it off for so long. But one day I was sent (thank you Anjali) the “Dog Rules”, which appears to have been written for me, specifically:
We are up to about rule 4 and Barley seems to be progressing nicely through this list. But more importantly, now she is my little companion… and I was the one found caught with her lying on my lap, on the lounge.
These are the things I’ve noticed about Barley which I believe facilitate her achieving her goal: to get more love.
1. She is always happy.
2. She is always ready to play.
3. She asks for what she wants.
4. She is always living in the moment.
5. She listens to her body’s needs – she sleeps when she wants to sleep; she runs when she feels like running; she plays as often as possible and she drinks plenty of water (we could all take a leaf from this book).
6. She gives copious bundles of love and affection.
Now yes, we do have responsibilities to fulfil on a daily basis. But after all is said and done, I believe we are in this life to find joy and happiness. If not for this then what have we got?
Could you learn a little from the way Barley lives her life? I certainly have… I’m off for some water, sunshine and a cuddle with Barley on the grass!
